Arenas Del Mar hosted my stay at the hotel, however the opinions that I share in this post are my own.
Arenas del Mar is a boutique hotel & nature resort in Costa Rica. The hotel itself is in the rainforest with monkeys, iguanas, toucans, and a number of other exotic animals hanging out in the trees. You are surrounded by nature and the beach is just steps from your room, but that isn’t the best part about the hotel – the best part is the hotel’s gluten-free accommodations.
Arenas del Mar is committed to offering safe and delicious dining for those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivities. Every menu at the resort is filled with gluten-free options. You are able to order nearly every item and if something is not gluten free, the chef will make substitutions in order to allow us gluten-free folks to enjoy the fine cuisine. You can also enjoy peace of mind knowing that the staff is trained in gluten-free food prep, so you can throw your cross-contamination fears out the window!
Gluten-Free Dining at Arenas del Mar Hotel & Resort
I stayed at the hotel for 6 nights, enjoying breakfast, lunch and dinner at the two restaurants on the resort’s grounds. For breakfast, I had classic Costa Rican gluten-free breakfast options like Gallo Pinto and Huevos Chileros a la Tica, both dishes with the typical rice and beans of the country and other local flavors. I was also served the most beautiful gluten-free pancakes that I have ever had, which I savored while looking at the ocean and dipping into fresh coconut syrup!
Lunch is available at Arenas del Mar’s Playitas Restaurant, situated right next to the beach. This meant when I got hungry while laying in the sun, delicious gluten-free food was just steps away. I stayed at the hotel with my mother (also gluten free) and step-dad, and we loved dining with our toes in the sand enjoying the tastiest gluten-free nachos ever!
When it comes to dinner at Arenas del Mar, they’ve got it down pat. Served at the El Mirador Restaurant (the same restaurant as breakfast), you have a beautiful view of the ocean from nearly every table. EVERY entree on the menu is gluten free, whether naturally or with substituted ingredients, with the exception of the mushroom risotto (according to the menu at the time of my stay, May 2014). That gives plenty of options to those eating gluten free on vacation – something that we are generally not used to when traveling! It was bliss.
While not all desserts are gluten free at Arenas del Mar, the hotel does a fantastic job at offering the option of special desserts. For example, I heard people raving about the Warm Chocolate Lava Cake, so I asked one evening if they could make it gluten free the next night. Sure enough, the next dinner we enjoyed the most delicious chocolate cake that I have ever had!
Plan a Gluten-Free Vacation at Arenas del Mar
After the wonderful experience I had at Arenas del Mar, I believe that they are the premiere gluten-free vacation destination. I would recommend planning a trip to the hotel & nature resort a million times over. They are committed to catering to the celiac and gluten-free community, so much in fact that the hotel is hosting two special weeks for our community! In September and November, there will be special guest-chefs visiting the resort to offer a worry-free week to those with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Mark your calendar for the weeks of September 13 and November 8 because this is a vacation that you won’t want to miss.
