Arenas del Mar hosted my stay at the hotel, however the opinions that I share in this post are my own.
If you come around here often, you’re already aware that I had the time of my life at Arenas del Mar, aka the best gluten-free vacation destination ever. The food was delicious and worry-free, while the location of the resort was paradise material.
I’ve already shared a review of my overall stay at Arenas del Mar, as well as a dedicated post to just the gluten-free breakfast options available at the resort. Naturally, the next thing to share with you is the gluten-free lunch options.
Lunch on the Beach
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, my favorite part about the gluten-free vacation that I had at Arenas del Mar was that I did not have to go to special locations to get special gluten-free food. You eat just like every other guest, the resort just happens to be awesome at accommodating gluten-free guests so you don’t feel the least bit restricted.
The beautiful thing about eating lunch at Arenas del Mar is the fact that it is on the beach, just steps away from the chairs that you lounge in the sun on. With your toes in the sand, you are able to enjoy some of the world’s most delicious nachos and homemade chips (fried separately to prevent cross-contamination). This is what I call heaven (If you know me, you know nachos are my one true love).
The gluten-free options on the lunch menu at Arenas del Mar’s Playitas Restaurant are endless. With the exception of the sandwiches found on the menu, you can have just about everything. And the fact that I couldn’t have a sandwich didn’t bother me one bit because you’re in Costa Rica – don’t get a hamburger for lunch, get something more exciting! It was also super cute how we were served little platters of fruit to start out each lunch.
If you’re craving a wrap or a dish that is made with a flour tortilla, no worries – just tell your server that you’d like to order the meal gluten free and they’ll make slight changes. Case in point: my mother wanted to get the Mahi Mahi Wrap, but we knew we couldn’t have the “Wrap” part of the meal. Instead, she was served a delicious version of the meal subbed with gluten-free corn tortillas. While it may have differed from the original gluten-filled version, it was still delicious. We were very impressed to see how far the resort goes to allow guests to order what they want to eat and not just what it blatantly gluten free.
Playitas Restaurant & Bar
The Playitas Restaurant & Bar is open from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. so guests are able to eat lunch whenever it fits in their schedule. There were a couple of days where we had an early lunch because that’s when our tummies growled, but then on days when we had excursions off-site, we were thankful for the opportunity to eat a late lunch.
Playitas Restaurant also has a delicious cocktail menu. The drinks I enjoyed while at Arenas del Mar weren’t your ordinary cocktails, either. Some of my favorites were the “Wild” Margaritas, including Mango & Cilantro and Blackberry & Thyme. It was nice to sip on out-of-the-ordinary cocktails while listening to the sounds of the waves crashing.
Gluten-Free Vacation in Costa Rica
All in all, my stay at Arenas del Mar was a dream comes true. I will definitely be going back and I hope that you plan a visit there, too. I want every gluten-free vacationer to be able to experience everything that Arenas del Mar has to offer.
The hotel is SO dedicated to providing a vacation destination to the gluten-free community that they are hosting TWO SPECIAL WEEKS in September and November. These two weeks (September 13th an November 8th) are planned for the celiac disease community and will include special chefs and of course, amazing gluten-free food.
